Ken
began ice skating at the age of 9 when he attended Ebinger Elementary School,
and continued to hone his skills while at Taft. He served as president of the
his class, and was a member of the skating, golf and track teams.
In 1948 he became the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team,
earning a bronze medal in the 500 meters.
In 1949 he dominated men's speed skating, winning many 500 and 1500 meter events
throughout Norway and Sweden. He placed fourth in the World Championships in
1949 and 1950, and in 1952 was gold medalist in the 500 meter speed skating
event at the Olympics and won the world championships.
Later Ken worked as a golf pro at various courses including the Park Ridge
Country Club, West Bend Country Club in Wisconsin, and Glen Flora in Waukegan.
Ken died in 2009.
